![]() ![]() Like Kirby, he has an innate belief in the iconic power of superheroes that gives them a dimension far beyond the usual four-colored adventures. Like Rockwell, Ross uses photographs to set up lighting and staging-a process documented in a section at the end of the book-and like Rockwell, he favors otherworldly lighting effects that somehow serve to make his figures more realistic. The son of a preacher and an illustrator, Ross was always captivated by superheroes, but it wasn't until he discovered the use of live models in art school that he was able to realize his visions of Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman and the rest. This lavish coffee- table tribute puts him into a pantheon as exalted as the superbeings he depicts. With art that looks like a hybrid of Norman Rockwell and Jack Kirby, artist Ross has become the preeminent painter of superheroes of his generation. ![]()

![]() ![]() ![]() The four books of Paradise Regained are sparse in action and external description, and rich in dialogue primarily between Jesus and Satan. ![]() That topic is the biblical Jesus’ Temptation in the Wilderness, recounted in the Synoptic Gospels (Matt. One of those amanuenses was the Quaker Thomas Ellwood, who recounts in his History of the Life of Thomas Ellwood (1714) that he responded to having read a manuscript version of Paradise Lost, “Thou hast said much here of paradise lost, but what hast thou to say of paradise found?” Ellwood may have provided Milton with some encouragement for a topic that he had long considered. Milton indicates his recognition the genre of brief epic, as Barbara Lewalski and others have noted, in his prose work The Reason of Church Government (1642): “that Epick form whereof the two poems of Homer, and those other two of Virgil and Tasso are a diffuse, and the book of Job a brief model.” Having become fully blind in 1654, Milton dictated both Paradise Lost and Paradise Regained, as well as the tragedy Samson Agonistes (published under the same book covers as Paradise Regained) to amanuenses, family-members, and friends who wrote down his spoken words. Paradise Regained (1671) is a brief epic of 2,070 blank verse lines that John Milton (1608–74) published just four years after the first publication of his epic Paradise Lost (1667 in 10 books 1674 in 12 books), an imaginative retelling of the biblical Genesis 1–3 and comprised of 10,565 blank verse lines. ![]() ![]() The novel has been translated into 17 languages and became an international bestseller.ĭue to the success of the novel, Pirinçci expanded his concept of "cat crime fiction" and published several sequels to Felidae, out of which Felidae II and Felidae V (Salve Roma!) have been translated into English. ![]() His next literary work, published in 1989, was the novel Felidae, a work of crime fiction with cats as the main protagonists. He was extremely fortunate to have been adopted into a loving home but the traces of abuse still linger in him years later. Rev’s parents stood out to me even more upon this reread. She’s a teenager, going through a lot, does not have a stable home life, is already facing sexism from a young age and is being cyber bullied. She’s prickly, angry, the testament of ‘hurt people hurt people’ applies to her quite aptly. But there are some really heartwarming moments sprinkled in between that allows you to get through it.Ībuse is never really great to read about, but it’s especially difficult when a child goes through it at the hand of a parent and Rev has gone through what no one should have to go through.Įmma isn’t the most likeable heroine. ![]() I need Brigid Kemmerer to get back to writing some more contemporary stories.Īs much as it isn’t a pleasant story to read, it made me feel warm inside. This duo of books is definitely up there as some of my favourite YA contemporaries and favourite books. ![]() ![]() ![]() I adored Emmeric and his kindness to Isda. I found the romance in this book aligned with the original story, but that doesn’t mean I liked it. The Phantom of the Opera is my favorite musical, and this book does it justice. I think this can be difficult because sometimes people take it too far one way or the other. The general plot is similar to the original story, but the details have changed to create a new world. She pays homage to the old story with some of the more negative personality traits of our Phantom. Olson does a fantastic job of retelling Phantom of the Opera in a new world. Slowly, she falls in love, and the world she thought she knew falls apart. She risks everything to become Emmeric’s vocal tutor and get him on the stage. That is until she meets Emmeric, the first person whose memories are in color. She lived under the opera and operated in the shadows. Isda’s job is to adjust the audience’s memories of the opera. “When do I get to step out of the shadows and live?” “Is that my fate? To always watch and envy and imagine?” “When is it my turn?” I ask. All gravoirs are to be killed upon birth, but Isda was saved by opera owner Cyril. You can tell who gravoirs are because they have a terrible marking on their face. It is so great and Garrick and Brenna's love story is moving. Problem is Garrick's father is still angry about how a group of Celts treated his son many years ago and now instead of being a wife to Garrick, Lady Brenna is a slave. It is a gripping tale of Vikings and Celts and poor Brenna is caught up in a betrothal she wants nothing to do with but her father wants to ensure their peoples safety. What did you think of the book? (Why this book?, New Author? Read more by author? Keeping? Thoughts on Hero? Heroine?) Yet Garrick Haardrad, the proud and powerful son of a ruthless Viking chieftan, claims her with a primitive abandon that leaves her breathless, igniting fires of passion that blaze through the cold Nordic nights and forge the unbreakable bonds of a fiery, eternal love. ![]() ![]() ![]() Lovely and dauntless, abducted by invaders from across an icy sea, Lady Brenna vowed vengeance - swearing no Viking brute would be her master.no barbarian would enslave her noble Celtic heart.
